This morning I headed along to a crowded press conference at Crown to receive the much anticipated announcement from world renowned UK chef Heston Blumenthal, who for some time has been rumoured to have been in talks with Crown Resorts about opening something new here in Melbourne.
Throwing a major curveball that apparently not even his key staff knew about, Blumenthal revealed today that the new venture at Crown (due for an early 2015 opening) would in fact be his three Michelin-starred restaurant The Fat Duck, which will be transplanted temporarily - staff and all - from bucolic Berkshire to Melbourne for six months while the flagship gets a reno. Yup that's right, what is widely considered one of the best restaurants in the world will be rehoused by the Yarra for a spell while the old girl gets a tart-up (read more here and here).
I was lucky enough to be granted a one-on-one interview with Heston on behalf of Broadsheet Media today and what a lovely fellow he proved to be. The interview is due to go live tomorrow, but in the meantime, here's the beaming selfie that I managed to score with the man himself.
